A note (by Ciarán) about the phonetic symbols

Learning Irish uses a pronunciation guide that's based on the one used by Foclóir Póca (which in turn is loosely based on the International Phonetic Alphabet). Because Learning Irish describes how Irish is spoken in one particular region (Cois Fhairrge), and Foclóir Póca describes what a "neutral" accent might be, it's natural that the two books differ in how they recommend many words are pronounced. But I want to highlight that Learning Irish also uses three symbols which aren't in Foclóir Póca:
